TIPS FOR WHEN CAR TROUBLE STRIKES
You’re driving along listening to your favorite song on the radio when the car starts to shudder. Then the dash lights go haywire, and the car stutters to a stop. Breakdowns can happen to anyone, but it’s best to be prepared so you can keep your head when things go wrong.
TAKE STEPS TO ENSURE SAFETY
Your safety, along with that of your passengers, is the most important element when the vehicle breaks down. Optimally, you would get off the road and pull into a nearby parking area to call for a tow. While this is still the ultimate goal, there are steps you will need to take first, and getting your car where you want it isn’t always an option.
You will first want to do your best to get off the road if possible. Get to the shoulder and stay visible. This means turning on your flashers or the inside lights at night. If you can safely exit your vehicle, you may consider raising the hood. You can also hang a white flag or paper out the window to signify the breakdown, allowing you to remain in the vehicle for safety. Once in the most secure location possible, be sure to call for a towing service. Getting your car off the road is critical for your safety and that of other drivers.
